The measure of an addition is whether a stranger can tell where the old house stops. That comes down to three things that all happen before any finish work: how the new foundation meets the old one, how the roof ties in, and whether the exterior actually matches. Brick in particular is unforgiving. A twenty year old brick almost never matches the same brick bought new, so matching it means sourcing carefully or planning a deliberate break rather than hoping nobody notices.
Most of the additions we are asked about here are primary suites and bonus rooms, and the practical constraint is usually the mechanical side rather than the space. An existing furnace sized for the original square footage will not heat a new suite properly, and finding that out in January is the wrong time. We work that out at the front end, along with what your town will permit, because rules vary considerably between municipalities across this metro.
